It’s time for the first official Fall Color Report of the season, and as most locals could tell you, there isn’t much to report just yet. We’re still looking at the occasional “show stopper” tree here and there, but overall, less than 5% of the trees have changed here in Sauk County.
Most of the color you’ll find at the park is right at the north shore parking lot. Surrounded by blacktop, these trees tend to change earlier, much like other urban trees. If you step back and look at the bluffs and hillsides, the forest still reads as mostly green, with just a tired, late-season look from recent warm weather. If you’re hoping for that picture-perfect autumn portrait, you’ll need to find just the right tree, or wait another couple of weeks.
For weekly reports, you can check out our Facebook page, where we offer an up-to-date report each Thursday through the fall color season, along with current photos from the park and surrounding area. For a quicker review, you can head over to the TravelWisconsin.com color map.

For nearly 2 decades the Skillet Creek blog has focused on 3 main goals; To inspire you to visit and explore the Devil’s Lake region, to help you get the most your visit by sharing tips, events, and other helpful information. Lastly to advocate for our environment & wildlife and talk about how we can keep our natural areas amazing now and into the future! That last goal can sometimes cause controversy, but it’s the only way we can accomplish the first two. – Derrick Mayoleth, Owner.
