Devil’s Lake sits in a glacially carved gorge between two quartzite bluffs, and paddling it is a completely different experience from the trails above. The lake is calm, clear, and quiet — gas-powered motorboats have been banned here since 1972, which means no wake and no engine noise. Kayaks, canoes, and standup boards are available to rent on-site. If you brought your own, both shores have launch ramps.

Hours & What to Know
Rentals run daily during the summer season, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. The last boat goes out at 5 p.m. and must be returned by 5:45 p.m. Rental stations are at both the North Shore Chateau and the South Shore Concessions Building.
On summer weekends and holidays, kayaks and paddleboards can be gone by midday. Arriving early is the only reliable strategy.

On the water
Boat Launches
Launches at both the north and south ends of the lake accept hand-carry and trailered craft. Trailer parking is available at both locations. The lake perimeter is approximately 3 miles by water.
A Wisconsin State Park pass is required for parking at both launch areas. Day passes are available at the entrance gates.
Rules on Devil’s Lake
- Gas-powered motors prohibited under Wis. Admin. Code NR 45.11(6)(a). In effect since 1964.
- Electric motors permitted at slow-no-wake speed only.
- Kayaks, canoes, and paddleboards have no motor restrictions.
- No waterskiing or tubing on Devil’s Lake.
- PFDs required for children under 13. All adults must have one on board.

Kayak Tours — Devil’s Lake Nature Center
The park’s Nature Center offers seasonal guided kayak tours during summer, led by DNR naturalists. Tours are a good option for first-time paddlers or anyone who wants a structured time on the water with interpretation. Cold Water Safety
Devil’s Lake can be dangerous in early season. Water temperatures run between 40°F and 50°F from ice-off through late spring. That’s cold enough to cause cold shock — an involuntary gasp reflex that can lead to drowning within minutes of immersion, before you’ve had a chance to react.
- Wear your PFD any time you’re on the water. If you go in unexpectedly, it keeps you at the surface while cold shock passes.
- Dress for the water temperature, not the air temperature. A wetsuit or dry suit provides critical insulation.
- Tell someone your plan — launch location, route, expected return time.
- Cold water risk persists past spring. Wisconsin lakes can surprise paddlers with near-hypothermic temperatures well into summer after cold weather moves through.
