Pewit’s Nest State Natural Area
Near Baraboo, Wisconsin • About 2 miles southwest of Baraboo on County W • State park pass required
Know before you go: Pewit’s Nest is a small, fragile site with limited parking and firm rules. Climbing, cliff jumping, and entering closed areas are prohibited and actively enforced. No pets off-leash. The lot fills quickly on summer weekends — arrive early or plan an alternate visit time.
Pewit’s Nest is a narrow sandstone gorge carved by Skillet Creek, located about 2 miles southwest of Baraboo on County W. The gorge runs 30 to 40 feet deep and was cut into the bedrock as Glacial Lake Baraboo drained at the end of the last ice age. The creek still flows through it, forming a series of small potholes and low waterfalls along the way. A short walking trail leads to the mouth of the gorge, with a separate spur that climbs to an overlook above the canyon rim. The site is managed by the Wisconsin DNR as State Natural Area No. 200 and has been protected since 1985. It draws a similar crowd to Parfrey’s Glen — expect a busy parking lot on summer weekends.
