The Point of Rocks National Landmark in Baraboo and the Van Hise Rock in Rock Springs, WI., are ideal places for studying the geology of central Wisconsin.
The Point of Rocks outcropping is on the southern edge of the Baraboo Range and is approximately 4000 feet thick. The quartzite rock that makes up the “Baraboo Range” is about 1.7 billion years old!
At the turn of the last century scientists studied both the Point of Rocks and Van Hise Rock at Ableman’s Gorge SNA in Rock Springs to form some of the early theories of geology. Ever since, geology students have been coming to these locations as part of their education.
