I hope you’re having a good snowy Thursday so far out there. If you’re on the roads, it’s time to remember your snow & slush skills! Pretty much the same as on the park trails: check your tread, go slow, take extra time, and be sure you can stop if you need to!

When it comes to hiking the trails at Devil’s Lake State Park this weekend, there are a couple of things you’ll need to know: First, Saturday is the deer gun hunting opener, so there will be hunting in the park. We suggest keeping to: East Bluff Trail, West Bluff Trail, Tumbled Rocks Trail & Grottos Trails to avoid hunters. (You may still hear gunfire.)

This is especially important on the first weekend. If you have to hike Steinke Basin or Roznos Meadow, be sure that you AND your pets wear blaze orange and, of course, keep the pups on a lead.

As far as the snow is concerned, it may or may not last to the weekend, but the bluff’s slightly higher elevation holds onto snow a bit longer than elsewhere. (Especially on the north end of the park.) Use extra caution on the pavement and stone stairways. Wear good shoes and expect snow, slush, and puddles everywhere. But with that said, don’t let the weather keep you inside!

Stay safe out there! 🙂
