The best place to view the fall congregation of cranes in Sauk County is along the Wisconsin River within the Aldo Leopold Foundations property. For information on their annual “Crane Congregation” tours click here.
Can you see the Sandhills for free? Yes. Each morning and evening Sandhill cranes by the thousands head out from their overnight location along the Wisconsin River to feed in the cornfields which are nearby in practically every location.
With even less effort, you can simply park along Levee Road (Rustic Road #49) near the Leopold Shack and the cranes will fly right over your head when they come to the river in the evening. Just remember, that you have to stay along side the road and not enter the Leopold Foundation’s property.
