Difficulty: Moderate
Why Hike It? Easy out-n-back on the meadow. Flowers, butterflies, amazing skies! If everything comes together, you might see a waterfall on the upper section.
Trail Description: The Roznos (Pronounced, “Rah-z-ness”) Meadow trail 3.8 mile trail is a hidden gem in Devil’s lake state park, and is part of the Ice Age trail system in Wisconsin. While we want to say it’s “quiet” the trail is becoming more popular. The lower “meadow” section is easy traveling through managed prairie and can offer amazing floral and tall grass landscapes. Look west for amazing sunsets!
The “upper” section of the trail is a difficult ascent that follows a small stream from the meadow up about 475 ft in elevation to join the Uplands/Ice Age Trail on the top of the bluffs. If you’re very lucky, you may even get to see “December Falls” running. This small ephemeral waterfall rarely flows, but when it does it’s beautiful!
Winter Use: The Meadow section of Roznos is a great spot for snowshoeing. The upper section is often not very wide, can be ice-covered and slippery, with steep embankments so be careful if you’re making your way up the bluff. In 2021 we created a winter “new years” day virtual hike that you can view on our YouTube channel covering the meadow section of the trail.
