Johnson Moraine Pond

Difficulty: Easy

Why Hike it? In the spring, experience a sometimes deafening din of frog songs from the kettle ponds! See a variety of very distinct glacial moraines.

Description:  A mix of grass and dirt trail, mostly wooded with a few short but steep hills.

Winter: As part of the Ice Age Trail, this trail is open to hiking, skiing and snowshoeing. Part of the trail may be “packed” but not tracked. Grooming is inconsistant.

Special Notes: With the (Temporary?) closure of a connector trail in 2018 from the Northern Lights campground to Steinke Basin, this trail is no longer a “Loop” as noted in some maps. If you start your hike by walking across the road from the Steinke Basin parking lot, you will walk about a quarter mile to a junction, if you turn right (east), you will eventually loop back to the Steinke Basin trail. If at the junction you go straight, you will be taken over to the Ice Age Campground.
