As autumn settles into Devil's Lake State Park and the surrounding Sauk County area, we're…
Weekend Weather & Trail Conditions at Devil’s Lake State Park.
Expect temperatures in the 40s with wet conditions this weekend. While mild temperatures are welcome, hiking trails will be wet with a mix of snow and ice. Remember that Wisconsin’s Antlerless-Only Holiday Hunt runs through January 1st – wear blaze orange on outlying trails for safety.
Ice Conditions?
By the morning of December 26th, Devil’s Lake had a thin covering of ice across the entire lake but with the rain and warm temps since then, it’s certainly not safe to be out on.
First Day Hikes
Mark your calendars for next week’s First Day Hikes at Mirror Lake & Devil’s Lake State Parks and celebrate the 125th Anniversary of Wisconsin State Parks!
Start 2025 at Mirror Lake State Park. Meet at the boat launch parking lot at 11 a.m. for a brief program and guided 1.5-mile hike. The route features the accessible 0.3-mile paved Echo Rock Trail’s scenic overlook, with an optional Cliffwood Coulee extension. Refreshments and a warming fire will be provided.
Time: 11 a.m. Distance: 0.3-1.5 miles
Devil’s Lake State Park (3:00-5:00 PM) Ranger Andy leads a 1.5-mile afternoon hike on Grottos Trail. Meet at the CCC Parking Lot near Group Camp on South Lake Road.
Important: Both hikes require a valid 2025 state parks admission sticker and weather-appropriate clothing.
See you on the trails!
For nearly 2 decades the Skillet Creek blog has focused on 3 main goals; To inspire you to visit and explore the Devil’s Lake region, to help you get the most your visit by sharing tips, events, and other helpful information. Lastly to advocate for our environment & wildlife and talk about how we can keep our natural areas amazing now and into the future! That last goal can sometimes cause controversy, but it’s the only way we can accomplish the first two. – Derrick Mayoleth, Owner.
