The 2024 deer gun season starts this weekend. Here in Sauk County, hunting of one…
If this is your first time in the Devil’s Lake State Park region or you haven’t explored much beyond the beach, here are my “Day 1” suggestions for getting the most out of a couple of days of exploring our natural beauty. Day 2 will follow tomorrow.
Early Morning: Parfrey’s Glen State Natural Area
Start your day at 6:00 AM sharp to avoid parking issues and crowds at Parfrey’s Glen, Wisconsin’s most popular State Natural Area.
- Wear water-resistant shoes
- Hike the trail and cross the stream
- Explore the rock formations and small waterfall
- Duration: Approximately 2 hours
- Note: Pets are not allowed in Parfrey’s Glen
Mid-Morning: Devil’s Lake State Park South Shore
By 9 am arrive at Devil’s Lake State Park’s South Shore. (Just a few minutes from Parfrey’s Glen) Here’s your hiking plan:
- Start at Balanced Rock Trail (.3 mile stairway trail)
- Continue to the East Bluff summit, take East Bluff Trail east to Devil’s Doorway
- Visit Devil’s Doorway
- Take East Bluff Trail to Potholes Trail to descend
- Complete the loop via Grottos Trail
Pro tip: Pack water, snacks, wear good hiking shoes (Never wear flip/flops) and allow 3-4 hours for this scenic and sometimes challenging hike.
Afternoon: Lunch and Water Activities
- 1:00 PM: Enjoy a packed lunch or visit South Shore Concessions – The park will be crowded by now. You’ll be glad you arrived early!
- 2:00 PM: Cool off with a swim, rent a kayak or paddleboard…
- Pet owners: Use the on-leash pet swim area at the south end of the beach
- Don’t forget sunscreen!
Evening: Dinner and Sunset Views
As the park quiets down, Baraboo offers many dining options:
- Local dining: Driftless Glen, Tumbled Rock Brewery, Balanced Rock Winery
- Fast food: Available on Hwy 136, north of Wal-Mart.
- Sunset viewing (7:35 PM): Stay at South Shore to see the sunset over the west bluff or visit Roznos Meadow for a breathtaking prairie sunset, framed by the bluffs
Night: Local Entertainment

For nearly 2 decades the Skillet Creek blog has focused on 3 main goals; To inspire you to visit and explore the Devil’s Lake region, to help you get the most your visit by sharing tips, events, and other helpful information. Lastly to advocate for our environment & wildlife and talk about how we can keep our natural areas amazing now and into the future! That last goal can sometimes cause controversy, but it’s the only way we can accomplish the first two. – Derrick Mayoleth, Owner.
