If you set up a time machine at Devil's Lake State Park and traveled backwards…
Nets installed at Devil’s Lake State Park yesterday are part of the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources Fisheries program’s comprehensive fishery survey, which takes place every 10 years. These nets primarily target northern pike but will also capture panfish and other species. The survey will continue for the next two weeks, during which the caught fish will be measured, weighed, and released back into the lake.
After the survey concludes, the collected data will be analyzed and compiled into a final report, which will be made available for public viewing. This information will be used to make informed management decisions regarding the lake’s regulations, stocking, and habitat conservation.
The last comprehensive fish survey for Devil’s Lake was conducted in 2013, and its final report provides an example of the data currently being collected. (2013 Report). Stay tuned for updates on the findings of this important study, which will contribute to the understanding and preservation of Devil’s Lake’s aquatic ecosystem.
For nearly 2 decades the Skillet Creek blog has focused on 3 main goals; To inspire you to visit and explore the Devil’s Lake region, to help you get the most your visit by sharing tips, events, and other helpful information. Lastly to advocate for our environment & wildlife and talk about how we can keep our natural areas amazing now and into the future! That last goal can sometimes cause controversy, but it’s the only way we can accomplish the first two. – Derrick Mayoleth, Owner.
