Wisconsin's fall colors are amazing, and Devil's Lake State Park is one of the best…
Two road projects may impact how you get to Devil’s Lake State Park for a while. First, South Shore Road from Devil’s Lake near the park’s North Shore entrance to Ski-Hi Road is being resurfaced. This could cause delays when entering or exiting the park. Second, there is a major construction project on Highway 33 through the city of Baraboo. This may affect access from the east when traveling to Devil’s Lake. Please allow extra time and plan alternate routes if needed with these road improvements.
South Shore Road Project
South Shore Rd. is under construction between Cty. Hwy. DL and Ski Hi Rd. It will be closed on weekdays and will reopen on weekends. Access to the south shore will remain open, however, there may be delays. Hwy. 113 to the east of the park can be used as an alternate route.
WIS 33 (Mulberry Street to County T)
This project through the city of Baraboo has just begun and will go in stages from now through November of next year. The project will replace deteriorating pavement on WIS 33 and improve safety by converting the existing 4-lane undivided highway to two lanes with a two-way left turn lane. The important news for park visitors is that if approach Baraboo from Hwy 33 (Exit 106), you will want to take an alternate route.
Detour #1, Exit at Hwy 12 near WI Dells.
This is the “Preferred” and signed detour route. Once you exit onto Hwy 12, you simply follow Hwy 12 south past the city of Baraboo and turn onto Ski-Hi Rd which will get you back to the park. (It’s about 3.7 miles from the exit to Ski-Hi Rd. ). Note too that during the week, you may not be able to turn left to the park’s north shore (See the first construction note!) and will have to go south.
Detour #2, Exit on Hwy 33, Turn on CTY X
If you are coming from the south and don’t want to drive up to Wisconsin Dells, you can turn on Hwy 33 as usual (Exit 106), then watch for the detour on your left onto Cty X to Cty W. Cty W is a country road that will take you along the bottom of the bluffs over to Hwy 113. From Hwy 113, you can turn left and watch for the signs to Devil’s Lake State Park.
Another Option, Hwy 78
Coming from the south on I90/94, you can also take exit 108a onto Hwy 78 to Merrimac. Turn onto Cty. DL. (Follow signs to Devil’s Head Resort.) This will take you past Parfrey’s Glen State Natural Area and over to Hwy 113. From Highway 113, you can turn right to go to Devil’s Lake State Park. Watch The Signs.
For nearly 2 decades the Skillet Creek blog has focused on 3 main goals; To inspire you to visit and explore the Devil’s Lake region, to help you get the most your visit by sharing tips, events, and other helpful information. Lastly to advocate for our environment & wildlife and talk about how we can keep our natural areas amazing now and into the future! That last goal can sometimes cause controversy, but it’s the only way we can accomplish the first two. – Derrick Mayoleth, Owner.
