There are so many holiday events these days, that it's nearly impossible (and expensive!) to…
We’re in the middle of August, and fall color predictions are already popping up in the press. For example, Farmer’s Almanac predicts peak fall foliage in Wisconsin will occur between October 5th and 14th this year. That’s a pretty safe bet, as that’s the norm for central Wisconsin.
Some reports, like one from Fox 31 in Denver, Colorado, are touting an especially vibrant season ahead due to ample rainfall this summer. But here in Wisconsin, it’s been fairly dry. (Even with recent rains.) Does that mean we’ll have more muted fall colors?
Not necessarily. Many factors impact the timing and vibrancy of fall foliage, not just precipitation. While a wet summer generally leads to healthier trees and better leaf retention, autumn weather patterns play a big role too. Lots of cold yet sunny fall days enhance those beloved reds, while frequent rainfall can knock leaves down prematurely leading to a more muted season.
Different tree species produce different colors and also drop leaves at varying times, adding complexity to predicting peak colors. Even during the severe 2012 drought, fall colors impressively popped in Wisconsin against expectations.
The truth is, long-range forecasts are guesswork. Visiting Devil’s Lake State Park anytime between the 2nd and 3rd weeks of October is a safe bet to catch vibrant color. But rather than spending too much time on predictions, I simply head out to photograph the changing foliage through the season and then share weekly reports starting about the last week in September, so you can decide when you want to visit. (Something I’ve been doing for many years now!)
Mother Nature works on her own schedule, so get out and enjoy the color progression through autumn and keep checking in because I’ll be documenting the fall spectacle here every step of the way.

For nearly 2 decades the Skillet Creek blog has focused on 3 main goals; To inspire you to visit and explore the Devil’s Lake region, to help you get the most your visit by sharing tips, events, and other helpful information. Lastly to advocate for our environment & wildlife and talk about how we can keep our natural areas amazing now and into the future! That last goal can sometimes cause controversy, but it’s the only way we can accomplish the first two. – Derrick Mayoleth, Owner.
