As autumn settles into Devil's Lake State Park and the surrounding Sauk County area, we're…
A fire broke out at the base of the East Bluff in Devil’s Lake State Park, near the railroad tracks, yesterday. According to news reports, as of this morning (Tuesday, July 11th), the fire was 99% extinguished. All trails on or leading to the East Bluff were closed this morning but were reopened around 9:15 am. Firefighters will continue monitoring the area throughout the day to prevent any flare-ups. The cause of the fire has not been reported at this time.
For nearly 2 decades the Skillet Creek blog has focused on 3 main goals; To inspire you to visit and explore the Devil’s Lake region, to help you get the most your visit by sharing tips, events, and other helpful information. Lastly to advocate for our environment & wildlife and talk about how we can keep our natural areas amazing now and into the future! That last goal can sometimes cause controversy, but it’s the only way we can accomplish the first two. – Derrick Mayoleth, Owner.

Hey Derek At the lake alot with my pups and want to thank you for all the effort you put in to keep us regulars informed
On another matter I saw a rattlesnake crawl under the east end of the boardwalk last Friday July 7th around 11 am headed right for the water I’m thinking it’s rare and in large part due to the extremely dry conditions we are experiencing Your thoughts would be appreciated Thanks Again for all you do for a our beautiful park !!!
Thanks!!
Interesting. I’ll assume you know your snakes! (More often than not when someone reports a rattlesnake near the water, it’s a northern watersnake.) Timber rattlesnakes are protected in Wisconsin, but are fairly common at Devil’s Lake State Park. The numbers are declining though due to Snake fungal disease which has been recorded in many species in the state. Generally in the park rattlesnakes stay up in the bluffs but certainly they could come down to the water if necessary.
We just finished hiking the East Bluff trail and it was totally open. The burned area didn’t look too bad.
