As we start talking about changing leaves, it's good to note that fall colors are…
As a “local” who spends more time on the trails than most, I can tell you that the idea that “everything is too crowded” on weekends and holidays, is only partly true. It’s crowded in places and times when everyone goes. BUT, it’s also very easy to find places to go to be nearly alone, even during peak days and times.
Here’s a gem I picked up early on: “Crowds thin after the first mile…” This nugget of wisdom, shared at a bustling national park, rings true in my experience. Go beyond the first couple of miles on a lengthy trail, and you’ll find it much less crowded. Take East Bluff, for instance, once you’re east of Devil’s Doorway, the hubbub significantly reduces. There’ll still be more people than usual on the Uplands Trail and Sauk Point Trail, but it won’t be overrun. And then there’s the added bonus of the other natural areas around Sauk County, which will be noticeably quieter, in fact, you may still be the only person in some natural areas.
An early start is another great strategy. Hitting the trail at 6 am assures a couple of peaceful hours. Yes, you might encounter other early risers, but they seek the same quietude. (The park also quiets down after 4 or 5 pm, so it’s generally easier to get parking and find some solitude on the trails in the evening.)
Bottom Line? Don’t be dissuaded from visiting parks this weekend due to anticipated crowds. While beaches, picnic areas, and parking lots may be bustling, careful planning can yield a serene weekend for nature enthusiasts.

Have fun, and stay safe out there!
For nearly 2 decades the Skillet Creek blog has focused on 3 main goals; To inspire you to visit and explore the Devil’s Lake region, to help you get the most your visit by sharing tips, events, and other helpful information. Lastly to advocate for our environment & wildlife and talk about how we can keep our natural areas amazing now and into the future! That last goal can sometimes cause controversy, but it’s the only way we can accomplish the first two. – Derrick Mayoleth, Owner.
