The summer crowd is still hanging around... Autumn is getting later. It's easy to see…
Happy Valentine’s Day! If you’re still looking for romantic ideas that involve getting outdoors (or almost getting outdoors!) we’ve got some suggestions for you…
1. Go For A Hike
(Parfrey’s Glen is a great choice!). It will be slick out there, so stay safe and wear ice cleats! (I’d say, stay out and watch the sunset.. but we’re expecting rain this evening!!) What are conditions like? Check our trail report.
2. Have a Campfire
At a park or in the backyard there’s nothing like a romantic, warm fire… and s’mores… Don’t forget the chocolate! And even though it’s winter.. make sure your fire is out when you leave!
3. How About A Picnic?
Pack your dinner and head to the park! Bring lots of towels to dry off the picnic tables that may be wet from melting snow! Don’t want to prepare food? Get takeout! Local distilleries, wineries & restaurants would love to provide everything you’ll want for your romantic picnic at the park! Heck, go to the store and loot the convince food section… Whatever your style! 😉 Here are a few local winery, distillery & dining suggestions.
3. Go Sledding
If you’re the “crazy” type, go sledding. It’s going to be a fast and soaking-wet experience but what can be more romantic than getting home to warm up and dry off after some crazy fun on the hill? (Just stay well away from trees today!) More: About Devil’s Lake’s Sledding Hill.
4. Go Birdwatching!
Pack your picnic in the car and head to Sauk Prairie to find eagles. See if you can find Trumpeter Swans anywhere there is open water. Look for the first Sandhill Cranes of the season (We heard them yesterday!) Even just sitting out back watching the feeders together can be a good time.
5. Go Skiing!
Yeah, the cross-country trails aren’t in the best shape, but on the other hand the last of the “good” snow out there will be at the local ski resorts, so maybe it’s downhill for Valentines! Devil’s Head reports all trails are open with a base between 32-52”.
6. Explore Somewhere New!
You don’t need to go far. Pick a park or nearby state natural area that you’ve never visited and go check it out! Have you checked out these nearby natural areas?
7. Go Camping In Your Living Room!
Not outdoors, but close! This is our favorite. Don’t like the weather? Set up your tent in the living room. Surround your tent with houseplants! Use Youtube to provide nature sounds and visuals. You can make many of your camping favorites in the kitchen as well… (OR order out!) You won’t need heavy blankets or winter sleeping bags cuz’ tents get warm in the living room… We know from experience!!
Whatever you do this Valentine’s Day. Have fun and as always be safe out there!
For nearly 2 decades the Skillet Creek blog has focused on 3 main goals; To inspire you to visit and explore the Devil’s Lake region, to help you get the most your visit by sharing tips, events, and other helpful information. Lastly to advocate for our environment & wildlife and talk about how we can keep our natural areas amazing now and into the future! That last goal can sometimes cause controversy, but it’s the only way we can accomplish the first two. – Derrick Mayoleth, Owner.
