The 2024 deer gun season starts this weekend. Here in Sauk County, hunting of one…
It’s a Winter Wonderland out there!! As of this morning, the Devil’s Lake State Park region is expecting 3 to 5 inches of snow with a Winter Weather Advisory in effect. It’s really coming down as I write this!
Winter Weather
As the day has progressed, driving and hiking conditions have been sketchy at best. Expect hiking trails to be snowcovered over the weekend, with some melting occurring as well. Stone stairways & cliff edges can be particularly dangerous in fresh snow as it makes it hard to see either the stairs or the cliffs. Also be aware of ice hidden under the snow which can come as a sudden, and dangerous surprise, even when wearing ice cleats!
Hunting is still going on in the park. Deer Gun Hunting continues this weekend including areas within Wisconsin State Parks… Statewide 4-Day Antlerless Only Hunt: Dec. 8–11, 2022. Know where hunting is allowed, wear bright colors, leash your pets, and expect to may hear gunfire.

For nearly 2 decades the Skillet Creek blog has focused on 3 main goals; To inspire you to visit and explore the Devil’s Lake region, to help you get the most your visit by sharing tips, events, and other helpful information. Lastly to advocate for our environment & wildlife and talk about how we can keep our natural areas amazing now and into the future! That last goal can sometimes cause controversy, but it’s the only way we can accomplish the first two. – Derrick Mayoleth, Owner.
