As we start talking about changing leaves, it's good to note that fall colors are…
During the summer months, we send off our trail reports to TravelWisconsin.com, but this time of year they swap the hiking trail reports for ski trail conditions. Here at Devil’s Lake State Park, the trails are mixed-use and while some folks do ski, most will still hike or snowshoe. This is why you can still find our trail reports at devilslakewisconsin.com/devils-lake-trail-reports/. Updates are posted on Thursdays to get you ready for the weekends.
This weekend will be cold in the 20s but sunny. The trails are in great winter condition because, well, there’s no snow out there! That said, there are patches of black ice out there and the stone stairways especially on the north end can be slippery, so watch your step. Also note that hunting continues in the park with Muzzleloader season going on now, followed by a 4-day antlerless season, then by the holiday hunt. So if you plan on hiking the Uplands, Steinke Basin, Sauk Point, or the Roznos Meadow Trails wear bright colors and of course, keep pets on a leash.
The 5-minute video above was taken today, December 2nd on the South Shore Boardwalk of Devil’s Lake State Park. This time of year, the mornings are quiet and peaceful with just the sounds of the geese and ducks to break the silence. Well, that and the snapping of the frozen boardwalk beneath my feet!!
Stay warm, and stay safe out there!
For nearly 2 decades the Skillet Creek blog has focused on 3 main goals; To inspire you to visit and explore the Devil’s Lake region, to help you get the most your visit by sharing tips, events, and other helpful information. Lastly to advocate for our environment & wildlife and talk about how we can keep our natural areas amazing now and into the future! That last goal can sometimes cause controversy, but it’s the only way we can accomplish the first two. – Derrick Mayoleth, Owner.
