Devil's Lake State Park has been transformed into a winter wonderland, with 3-5 inches of…
40F. Right now the surface water temperature of Devil’s Lake is around 40 degrees. That’s about the average temp of the surface water of Lake Superior in early June.
According to Minnesota Sea Grant, “In water that is 32-40 degrees Fahrenheit, a person can typically swim for up to 7 minutes before exhaustion. In water that is around the freezing point, a person is likely to survive only 15 to 45 minutes with flotation and possibly up to an hour or so with flotation and protective gear before the brain and heart stop.” – https://seagrant.umn.edu/…/recreation-and…/hypothermia
With high temps heading back into the 40s (Near 50 by Thursday!), It may still be a while before the lake freezes entirely… (but I still wouldn’t be swimming!)
For nearly 2 decades the Skillet Creek blog has focused on 3 main goals; To inspire you to visit and explore the Devil’s Lake region, to help you get the most your visit by sharing tips, events, and other helpful information. Lastly to advocate for our environment & wildlife and talk about how we can keep our natural areas amazing now and into the future! That last goal can sometimes cause controversy, but it’s the only way we can accomplish the first two. – Derrick Mayoleth, Owner.
