As we start talking about changing leaves, it's good to note that fall colors are…
57 days To Autumn! The equinox is on the 22nd in 2022, the 23rd in 2023, and in 2024?? The 22nd again. Welp, It was fun while it lasted.
Peak Color Is A Moving Target
As you know Devil’s Lake State Park and really all of the Baraboo Hills region is a popular fall color destination. Usually, around mid-September, you start hearing all of the annual prognostications about the “peak weekend”. Hundreds, probably thousands of people try to hit that peak and wherever it’s called, Devil’s Lake State Park can be quite a madhouse. But there are 2 things wrong with this Peak Weekend fixation. First, “Peak” isn’t a weekend, it’s a week or maybe two weeks and it moves around. The color change moves through the environment like waves. Some areas will be at their “peak” color while others are hardly changed. The other thing is, this a busy tourism area, to have the best experience you need to plan ahead!
2 Week Peak
Here, we like to focus on a “2 Week Peak”. An approximate 2-week window where you will easily get awesome fall color pictures if you know where to look. This almost always falls on the first two or second two weeks of October depending on weather and climate variations. In fact, if you booked your lodging now for the second week in October, the odds are you’re going to see some great color! But we’ll certainly be reporting on the changes as we get closer to the season.

For nearly 2 decades the Skillet Creek blog has focused on 3 main goals; To inspire you to visit and explore the Devil’s Lake region, to help you get the most your visit by sharing tips, events, and other helpful information. Lastly to advocate for our environment & wildlife and talk about how we can keep our natural areas amazing now and into the future! That last goal can sometimes cause controversy, but it’s the only way we can accomplish the first two. – Derrick Mayoleth, Owner.
