The summer crowd is still hanging around... Autumn is getting later. It's easy to see…
In August of 2021, one of our “critter cam” trap cameras was finally able to document a black bear in the wilds of Devil’s Lake State Park in Baraboo, Wisconsin. This may be the first time a black bear was captured on video within the park. We have photographed “scat” many times over the years and knew it was just a matter of time. Quite a nice surprise when I checked our cameras yesterday!
Since 2015 we have had a number of trap cameras in the park and over the years have captured a variety of rarely seen (in the park) critters including bobcats, fishers, and possibly a wolf. We regularly share our critter cam captures on our Facebook Page and right here at DevilsLakeWisconsin.com.
Now, on a side note, our critter cams are located far from day-use areas or hiking trails, which means we capture more wildlife and that the bear in the video is nowhere near where you might be hiking! Well, not on this day anyway!
For nearly 2 decades the Skillet Creek blog has focused on 3 main goals; To inspire you to visit and explore the Devil’s Lake region, to help you get the most your visit by sharing tips, events, and other helpful information. Lastly to advocate for our environment & wildlife and talk about how we can keep our natural areas amazing now and into the future! That last goal can sometimes cause controversy, but it’s the only way we can accomplish the first two. – Derrick Mayoleth, Owner.

Derrick looks like Saskwatch to me. I had a black bear in my back yard a few years ago. Broke off my bird feeder which was cemented in the ground. I live against the
South Bluff on Hallweg Rd.
Yup! We’ve seen bear scat on the south bluff many times in the last 4-5 years.. (this camera is out there), and knew it would be just a matter of time. 🙂
