As autumn settles into Devil's Lake State Park and the surrounding Sauk County area, we're…
The warm weather over the last few days has really helped to melt the ice on Devil’s Lake. Yesterday’s rain has just about melted the rest of it. (And created a nice fog too!)
Interestingly, Devil’s Lake, which is protected by 500-foot bluffs stays cool longer and is one of the last bodies of water in the area to lose its ice. Lake Wisconsin near Merrimac has been open for a week or so now and the Merrimac Ferry is once again open and taking folks back and forth across the lake. Mirror Lake near Wisconsin Dells is also mostly open.
Cold Water Safety
So, it’s time to get out and enjoy the water. But remember, it’s very easy to get in trouble out there when the water is this cold. It’s possible to die within seconds of hitting the water. Seriously. We’ve got some information right here that’s worth reading about cold shock, hypothermia, and what you can do to stay safe if you do want to get on the water this time of year.
For nearly 2 decades the Skillet Creek blog has focused on 3 main goals; To inspire you to visit and explore the Devil’s Lake region, to help you get the most your visit by sharing tips, events, and other helpful information. Lastly to advocate for our environment & wildlife and talk about how we can keep our natural areas amazing now and into the future! That last goal can sometimes cause controversy, but it’s the only way we can accomplish the first two. – Derrick Mayoleth, Owner.

Wow! I have lived my entire life In Baraboo. Picnics, walks, biking. My dad even had us look for arrowheads. When mom worked..
Dad put us on the North Shore Tumble and raced him (driving) to the South shore.
Tears came to my eyes when I saw your photos. Are they for sale?
