whitetail buck at Devil's Lake State Park

It’s #WildlifeWednesday and it’s been a few weeks since we’ve checked in on our Devil’s Lake State Park trail cams.

This time of year is when we start heading out to each camera to replace the batteries for the long winter months when, depending on the weather, we may not be able to get out to them until spring! At this time of year we also switch all of our video cameras to still shots, again to save battery power over the winter.

This time around the pictures are from one of our South Bluff cameras. While not as exciting as our past camera which was visited by bobcats and a possible wolf, it’s still nice to see who was out there! That big whitetail buck was sure hanging around!

How Many Photos?

Of course, we get many more photos than what we post here. Sometimes hundreds!! Sometimes a plant will grow in front of the camera and leaves will set it off 50 or more times a day! Other times squirrels live nearby and will run around in front of the camera every day, trigging tons of photos. In the end, we have to sort them out to get down to our few best shots. And sometimes, (other than the squirrels) we get nothing at all!

When you see the beauty and grace of that Buck innocently foriging thru out the woods, it never ceases to amaze me that people take pleasure in hunting these magnificent creatures for the “sport” . I truly understand hunting to put meat on the table for your Family but when you are affluent and don’t need the meat because you are financially stable, to kill for the sake of the hunt is heart wrenching. I do respect their right to do so legally BUT…………………………….
