Fall Colors October 2020

The colors are changing quickly now in the Baraboo Hills. We’re expecting low temps with possible frost tonight and in the next few days. We’ve read that peak color won’t come to our area until the 3rd week of October, but personally, I think it will be a bit sooner. Well, let’s get into it!

At A Glance!

Last week we said, “It’s pretty green out there, but you will find a few bright and colorful trees, especially around roads, parking lots, picnic areas, and campgrounds. More sun equals more color.” The same holds true this week but with a bit more color than before. Certainly, you can get some nice portrait shots out there this week.

By Car?

If your goal is to tour the color around the Baraboo Hills by car, the best roadway shows are a week or two off yet. We’ve got some great scenic drive suggestions and maps right here.

Peak?

Again, we’re thinking the second weekend, around the 16th. But the color gods are fickle. Just keep checking in and we’ll keep you informed.

More

While you’re out and about this weekend, remember that the Fermentation Fest’s Art DTour is going on through Oct 4th. The Farm/Art DTour is a free, self-guided, 50+ mile agri/cultural excursion through the scenic working farmlands of rural Sauk County.  It’s a perfect social distanced, way to get out and enjoy the color. You can learn more here.

Oct 4th – Earth, Water, Sky

We also invite you to head over to the Sauk Prairie Recreation Area on the southern border of Devil’s Lake State Park for the Native Art Marketplace at Maa Wakacak Studio put on by our friends at the Little Eagle Art Foundation. (Maa Wakacak means “Sacred Land” and is the name of the Ho-Chunk land on the Sauk Prairie.) Saturday and Sunday, 10 am – 4 pm, LEAF’s studio will be hosting art sales and demonstrations. You can learn more here. On Sunday, Oct 4th at 1 pm there will also be the official unveiling of “Earth, Sky, Water”, a public art installation on the Great Sauk State Trail. Click the poster below to enlarge it for details.
