Baraboo Riverwalk Bridge

So you brought your kids bikes along to Devil’s Lake State Park because you read that there is a bike trail. Ugg. Yeah, Devil’s Lake State Park has a “mountain” bike trail. It’s not fun for young kids! But we’ve got a solution for you just a few minutes away from the park.

Baraboo Riverwalk

All you need to do is load up the bikes and head down Old Lake Road from Devil’s Lake State Park just 2 miles and you and your family can ride the free, paved Baraboo Riverwalk!

East or West?

The Baraboo Riverwalk is part of the National Ice Age Trail. It is effectively divided into 2 sections. The eastern loop which is the one closest to the park is just about 1.3 miles and takes an adult under 10 minutes to ride. We’ve got a virtual ride video for you here.

You can also ride west along Water Street to Circus World. If you continue west for about a mile past Circus World, you can jump on the western section of the Riverwalk. This section takes you to Oschern’s Park & Zoo. This is an out-and-back trail.

Ride & Walk Between Sections

There is a paved trail section from the parking lot (see map below.) to the entrance of Circus World and a bike rack at CW. Beyond Circus World heading west, there is no more trail, simply the sidewalk. We would not recommend riding Water street with kids here. It can get very busy due to the attraction. However, it’s not a long walk over to the western trailhead. You can also stop off at Driftless Glen for lunch!

Western Section?

As I said, the second half of the Baraboo Riverwalk is an out-and-back and comes to about 4 miles if you include the walk/ride from the eastern loop. This section follows the Baraboo River and is mostly shaded. It will also take you to the local park and free zoo so that’s a good encouragement for the kids! We have a video ride of this section as well for you to check out.

More Choices?

There are other good options for families who want to spend more time on their bikes while visiting the area. The Great Sauk Trail is just south of Devil’s Lake State Park, starting in Sauk City and covers about 10 miles. The 400 State Bike Trail starts in Reedsburg and heads north to meet up with the Elroy Sparta Trail. You will need Wisconsin State Trail Passes for anyone 16 or over for the state trails. You can learn more about these trails here.

Don’t Kill Your Kids!

I hope this helps! I’ve talked to more than a few families out on Devil’s Lake State Park’s Steinke Basin while their young kids try to push their training wheels through the gravel and rock. Don’t do it, we’ve got better trails just a few minutes away!

Repairs & Rentals?
