There are so many holiday events these days, that it's nearly impossible (and expensive!) to…
There have been a lot of questions about the Baraboo “Festival Foods” fireworks show this year as it relates to COVID19. Well, let me start by sharing with you some information posted by the Baraboo Police Department.
Baraboo Police Department has been fielding several questions about the upcoming fireworks display on Saturday. We hope that this post will help clear up many of your questions and concerns.
The fireworks will again be launched behind the Meat Market. However, the “Barabooms” festival at the fairgrounds which typically precedes the fireworks has been cancelled due to Covid 19 concerns. As such, the fairgrounds will be completely closed and no parking will be available on the property.
Citizens will be allowed to park along city streets and in public parking lots to enjoy the show. Parking is on a first come, first serve basis. You will not be allowed to block off parking stalls or portions of curb lines in an effort to reserve spots. Officers will be patrolling the neighborhoods to ensure this isn’t occurring. Parking along HWY 33 is NOT ALLOWED, and will be marking with signs. We also ask that citizens be cognizant of business parking lots. These lots are private property and for the use of customers. Some businesses will be open during the hours of the event, and they have the authority to prevent non-customers from using their lots.
In an effort to help with congestion on the east side of town and make things a bit easier for citizens, the height of the fireworks is being increased. Typically, the fireworks are launched to a distance of 200 feet. However, this year ther are being launched to a distance of 400 feet. The fireworks will signficantly clear the tree line, which will allow them to be seen from most anywhere in the city. It is likely that you will be able to enjoy the show from the comfort of your home. It should be noted that test fireworks will be launched in 15 minute increments leading up to the show to help citizens determine where the will be able to see the display. In short, if you can see the test fireworks from your location, you will be able to see the full show.
We hope you all have a safe and enjoyable 4th of July!
So where is “behind the meat market? Here’s a map. Zoom out to see the location in relationship to Devil’s Lake State Park.
Time?
Test fireworks will be starting at about 8 p.m on the evening of July 4th and there will be a medium-height firework shot about every 15 minutes to let people know if they are in a spot where they can see the fireworks. The fireworks will start at approximately 9:45 PM on July 4.
How To Watch?
Well, as they said, with an additional 200 feet of elevation, you may be able to see them from anywhere around the city. If you’re at Devil’s Lake State Park, you would probably have to get out of the forested campgrounds and watch the show to the north. I don’t hold out hope that you’ll see them from most day-use areas within the park. You could try the Steinke Basin parking lot area, but to be sure, then head into Baraboo.
I reached out to the Baraboo Police Department for their recommended viewing location for park visitors and they suggested heading to Pierce Park just down the road from Devil’s Lake’s North Shore Entrance.

For nearly 2 decades the Skillet Creek blog has focused on 3 main goals; To inspire you to visit and explore the Devil’s Lake region, to help you get the most your visit by sharing tips, events, and other helpful information. Lastly to advocate for our environment & wildlife and talk about how we can keep our natural areas amazing now and into the future! That last goal can sometimes cause controversy, but it’s the only way we can accomplish the first two. – Derrick Mayoleth, Owner.
