Happy Friday! Your weekend mission, should you choose to accept it... If you're looking for…
We’ll help you get your Devil’s Lake State Park fix! While we can’t visit Devil’s Lake, Parfrey’s Glen and other trails and natural areas right now, (Learn More) we’re going to go that extra mile to bring you some Devil’s Lake joy through Virtual hikes and other video content, some interesting history and geology, nature crafts and of course, LOTS of photographs! The best way to keep up with what we’re doing is by following along on Facebook or one of our other social media channels. But I’ll do my best to share some fun stuff here as well. So let’s get started!
Walking The Devil’s Nose!
I’ve just added this new video hike from atop the eastern end of Devil’s Lake State Park’s south bluff within the Devil’s Nose State Natural Area (#97). Just one of the State Natural Areas within Devil’s Lake State Park’s borders. There’s no music or narration, it’s just a 7-minute virtual hike. You’ll see a cool wetland, hear some spring frogs (who go silent as soon as I get close) and experience an amazing vista looking out over the Merrimac Preserve to the east.
(I always recommend opening these videos using the Youtube App on your big screen if you can!)
Spring Flowers!
Officially Devil’s Lake State Park is closed as of this morning. Yesterday however I got out for a walk along the Tumbled Rocks trail. It was great to see some green out there between the rocks!
Draw A Bat!
We love bats!! Sadly, at Devil’s Lake State Park the bat populations have plummeted due to white-nose syndrome, still, we love to get out in the park and watch them when we can! Until then, maybe we can learn to draw one! Here’s a step by step guide to show us all how to draw a bat. CLICK HERE, larger version.
Discover… Monsters?
From geology to glaciers to photos of our lake monster, you’ll find answers to many of your burning Devil’s Lake State Park questions in our Discovery section of this website! We’ll answer questions like, “Did glaciers make the lake?”, “Why are the rocks pink?”, “Are there bears in the park” and many, many more. Click here to begin your voyage of Devil’s Lake Discovery!
Be Well!
That’s it for today. Hang in there, we’re all in this together. Stay safe and be well!
For nearly 2 decades the Skillet Creek blog has focused on 3 main goals; To inspire you to visit and explore the Devil’s Lake region, to help you get the most your visit by sharing tips, events, and other helpful information. Lastly to advocate for our environment & wildlife and talk about how we can keep our natural areas amazing now and into the future! That last goal can sometimes cause controversy, but it’s the only way we can accomplish the first two. – Derrick Mayoleth, Owner.
