December 20, 2024 Fresh Snow Alert! We received approximately 8 inches of snow yesterday through…
We’re getting a lot of questions about the status of Devil’s Lake State Park. As of this moment, Wisconsin State Parks are open.
We realize that there are lots of questions out there, and social media is full of misinformation but it’s also quite easy to find out if the Wisconsin State Parks were to close. First, simply get on the park’s mailing list. Subscribing to DNR updates is the easiest way to get notified if the parks were to close. You could also click on the DNR parks bureau website which would have a notice if parks were to close. And of course, we’re local and have been running this website since 1996, so we’ll let you know as well. There’s no reason to be taken off guard or be misled by rumors.
Calling The Park
We’ve heard from people saying they tried calling the park to see if it was open, but no one answers. Well, even under normal times, it’s been hard to speak to a real person at the park. Any changes in staff due to COVID-19 in the future would only make it worse. You’d probably be helping everyone out by NOT calling. Again, use the methods above to learn the park’s status. That said, I believe the park would use an automated phone message if it were to close.
Things Could Change
We should all expect changes and be flexible. I would anticipate some park events may change but again, summer is a long way off. We suggest you follow our Facebook page or subscribe to our blog for updates.
Live, Learn, Adapt
Meanwhile, around the park, most local restaurants near the park are developing delivery and curbside plans right now which can still provide great food for park visitors. Local campgrounds are taking reservations. I have to think that you can “social distance” in your tents and RVs. (Well, maybe not use public showers, etc..). Again, we can’t say what will be going on in June, July and August, but right now if the parks stay open, you’ll still need reservations for lodging and camping. When you make reservations in good faith, then simply ask your hosts what their cancelation policies will be if COVID-19 prevents your trip. I’m sure you’ll be well looked after by our local businesses either way. But communication and staying informed is key.
As I’ve said before, we’re all in this together. We’ve got questions too, but we’re right here on the ground here in Baraboo and we’ll do our best to keep you informed throughout the season.
Remember, summer sunsets won’t be canceled. 🙂
For nearly 2 decades the Skillet Creek blog has focused on 3 main goals; To inspire you to visit and explore the Devil’s Lake region, to help you get the most your visit by sharing tips, events, and other helpful information. Lastly to advocate for our environment & wildlife and talk about how we can keep our natural areas amazing now and into the future! That last goal can sometimes cause controversy, but it’s the only way we can accomplish the first two. – Derrick Mayoleth, Owner.
