Sad news today. Former Devil's Lake State Park Naturalist and author Ken Lange has passed…
The news has been floating around for a couple of weeks now, but today we can “officially” report that Devil’s Lake State Park’s superintendent, Steve Schmelzer, is no longer at the park and has moved to a new position within the DNR. I’ve been told that the superintendent position is now in the early stages of “open recruitment”. This is DNR speak for a long process that will eventually fill the position. We wish Mr. Schmelzer all the best in his new endeavors and are hopeful for the next chapter in the Devil’s Lake story.
Interestingly the head of the park system, Director Ben Bergy, has also moved on to a new position outside of the DNR. We also wish him all the best in his new adventures. In my opinion, Ben was good for the parks and brought about some positive changes. Again, the DNR is going through their “open recruitment” process to find a new parks director.
The only constant.., is change.
For nearly 2 decades the Skillet Creek blog has focused on 3 main goals; To inspire you to visit and explore the Devil’s Lake region, to help you get the most your visit by sharing tips, events, and other helpful information. Lastly to advocate for our environment & wildlife and talk about how we can keep our natural areas amazing now and into the future! That last goal can sometimes cause controversy, but it’s the only way we can accomplish the first two. – Derrick Mayoleth, Owner.
