Beautiful ice formations have returned to Mirror Lake State Park! We expect the ice to…
Most of the time when someone asks what trail in the park is “flattish, easyish, shortish, familyish”, especially in the winter, we’ll point them to the Grottos Trail on Devil’s Lake’s south shore. It’s ideal for snowshoeing this time of year! You can get in a great 2-mile loop at the foot of the east bluff by combining it with the Group Camp trail with nary a hill, rut or icy, slippery pavement* to slow you down.
If you can’t get out on the trails for whatever reason, want to size it up or simply want to chill to some video, I’ve uploaded a new 25 min “slow tv” hike from the CCC parking area out to the lake on Youtube just for you. Enjoy!

* Well, there is that steep staircase on the Group Camp Trail. You can avoid it by simply going out and back on Grottos.
For nearly 2 decades the Skillet Creek blog has focused on 3 main goals; To inspire you to visit and explore the Devil’s Lake region, to help you get the most your visit by sharing tips, events, and other helpful information. Lastly to advocate for our environment & wildlife and talk about how we can keep our natural areas amazing now and into the future! That last goal can sometimes cause controversy, but it’s the only way we can accomplish the first two. – Derrick Mayoleth, Owner.

Derrick, do you post any of your videos on YouTube? I’d seriously like to watch a bunch of your postings on our big smart(ish) tv. The critter cams, the ones of you guys paddling, this snowshoe one, all would look great on a big screen.
I did a quick search for you on YouTube but no luck.
Thanks!
Why YES, & thank you. 😉 I do the same thing. It’s https://www.youtube.com/user/SkilletCreekMedia. Usually, if I post a video on the website, you can click on one corner and it will take you to the individual youtube page. I plan to continue with more hikes, paddles, etc around the area this summer.
Thanks again!!
Oh man, what a treasure trove — thank you!
