As autumn settles into Devil's Lake State Park and the surrounding Sauk County area, we're…
Once the snow started, it seems to keep coming! We’re expecting light snow to continue through Saturday. That said, there are free snowshoes to borrow at Devil’s Lake Nature Center, a photo hike on Saturday and it’s Winterfest time in Baraboo. So, it’ll be a good time to get out and enjoy the winter weather!
Borrow Snowshoes for Free!
Yup, you just have to stop by the Nature Center during regular hours and you can borrow snowshoes for free. You do have to stay in the park, but otherwise, you can pretty much go anywhere! We’ve got more details and suggestions posted here.
Winter Photo Hike
Meet at the Steinke Basin Parking Lot, this Saturday, January 25 for a fun photo hike at Devil’s Lake State Park from 3:30 – 6:00 pm.
What better excuse to get outside in the winter is to go on a hike to take pictures! This will be an informal hike or snowshoe with chances to get out and take pictures of Devil’s Lake in winter. This hike is a good one for armature photographers or photographers who would like to help others take better pictures.
You will start at Steinke basin, heading up the rescue road to the top of the east bluff. Since you’ll will be hiking near dusk, there’s a chance for a beautiful sunset to take pictures of from on top of the bluff. Be sure to bring a flashlight or headlamp with you since you’ll be hiking back down at twilight.
This will be about a 2-mile hike with some rugged/difficult terrain, but not too steep of hills. It can get chilly on top of the bluff, so make sure to dress in layers and bring water with you.
There is enough snow to snowshoe. Please bring your own snowshoes; There will also be a limited number of snowshoes for participants to borrow. And, don’t forget your camera!
This hike is best for older/teenage children and adults

Freeze Over!
On January 21st, Devil’s Lake fully froze over. We’d like to say, “for the season” but this morning it looks like a section might have opened again!! That said, one local ice fisherman reported about 7 inches of ice about 100 yards out from the South Shore (But things are changing all of the time out there). Remember, venture on the ice at your own risk!
Winterfest in Baraboo!
We’re looking forward to the Candlelight Walk on the Baraboo Riverwalk Saturday evening from 6-8 pm but there’s something going on all weekend. Check out the list below or visit the Baraboo Park’s & Rec page for details.
Have A Great Weekend!
Have a great weekend everyone! Stay warm, be safe! As always, we’re glad you’re here and visiting our community!
For nearly 2 decades the Skillet Creek blog has focused on 3 main goals; To inspire you to visit and explore the Devil’s Lake region, to help you get the most your visit by sharing tips, events, and other helpful information. Lastly to advocate for our environment & wildlife and talk about how we can keep our natural areas amazing now and into the future! That last goal can sometimes cause controversy, but it’s the only way we can accomplish the first two. – Derrick Mayoleth, Owner.
