Attention park visitors! The annual lake fly hatch is currently in full effect around Devil's…
While many smaller lakes and ponds in the area are now frozen or at least have a thin coating of ice on the surface, Devil’s Lake is still open. There is only a bit of ice building up along the shorelines. So how cold is the water?
Well, today we sunk a thermometer into the lake on both the north and south shore. Here’s what we found out. On the south end of the lake, the water temperature was about 37f. Cold but still 5 degrees above freezing. The photo above was taken as we sunk the thermometer into the water.
We also checked the water temperature in the lagoon on the north shore. Here the water was reading about 34 degrees about 10 feet from shore and around 2 feet down. At this rate, it won’t be long before ice starts forming on the surface of Devil’s Lake as well.
For nearly 2 decades the Skillet Creek blog has focused on 3 main goals; To inspire you to visit and explore the Devil’s Lake region, to help you get the most your visit by sharing tips, events, and other helpful information. Lastly to advocate for our environment & wildlife and talk about how we can keep our natural areas amazing now and into the future! That last goal can sometimes cause controversy, but it’s the only way we can accomplish the first two. – Derrick Mayoleth, Owner.
