There are so many holiday events these days, that it's nearly impossible (and expensive!) to…
We’re back from our own vacation just in time for local activities, events and fall colors to start rocking. So, let’s jump right in and cover all the stuff you’ll want to know for this weekend.
Weather
This weekend, expect it to be partly sunny, with the best chance of rain on Saturday. Temps will be in the high 50s to 60. Here’s one local forecast.
Fall Colors?
Each week on Wednesday through October we’ll give you detailed information about fall colors at the park and in the area. Click here to see this week’s post. Hint; It’s not “peak” yet! Here’s some more info with video, tips and more.
Trail Conditions
So much rain, so little time. Many of the popular trails at Devil’s Lake State Park are paved, so they are good. However, the Uplands Trail and Steinke basin trails are trashed in low-lying areas. Here’s where we post our regularly updated trail reports.
Birds & Wildlife?
The big show at Devil’s Lake State Park right now is the gathering of the Turkey Vultures! You’ll want to catch them soon because suddenly they’ll be gone! Read More.

We will once again be chip-timing the races with the help of Tortoise and Hare Race Management timing company, the 1-mile hike is not timed.
The goal of this event is to introduce people to the state park and to raise funds to support ongoing and future Friends’ projects at the park. You will run along scenic Mirror Lake, near sandstone cliffs, up and down steep hills (did we mention the hills?) and to the finish line where you can enjoy post-race food and beverages including s’mores around a campfire, making for a truly unique running experience! For nearly 2 decades the Skillet Creek blog has focused on 3 main goals; To inspire you to visit and explore the Devil’s Lake region, to help you get the most your visit by sharing tips, events, and other helpful information. Lastly to advocate for our environment & wildlife and talk about how we can keep our natural areas amazing now and into the future! That last goal can sometimes cause controversy, but it’s the only way we can accomplish the first two. – Derrick Mayoleth, Owner.
