Sad news today. Former Devil's Lake State Park Naturalist and author Ken Lange has passed…
I confirmed with Bug Tussel Wireless Customer Service that they are indeed planning to build a cell tower near or in Devil’s Lake State Park.
So here’s what I know for sure at this point. There was a rumor going around online that Bugtussle Wireless is putting up a 180ft cell tower just outside of Devil’s Lake State Park’s north entrance on Lake Road between Park & South Shore road in Baraboo. I emailed customer service and asked if these specific facts were correct. Here was the response I received;
” That is correct, we do plan to build a tower in Devil’s Lake.”

Updated: After reading this precise response, it left me wondering if the tower going to be on park property or private property? I’m not a reporter, but a quick Google of “bugtussle cell tower devils lake state park” didn’t turn up anything. I again emailed Bug Tussle regarding the location. (Let’s hope the folks at the Baraboo News Republic will ask the other important questions and fill us all in.)
Update: Bug Tussle customer service confirmed that the location of the tower is outside of the boundaries of the state park. Here is their full response to my follow up question;
“I took some time to meet with our Site Acquisition team. I’ve confirmed that the location of the tower is outside of the boundaries of the state park. I assure you that the protection of our forests and wildlife is of importance to us, and appreciate your concern.”

Personally, I’m not offering any opinion until we see more details. Cell service in the park is sketchy and we do need to address it, but we certainly don’t want any more unannounced eyesores in or near the park either. Let’s hope more information will be forthcoming.
For nearly 2 decades the Skillet Creek blog has focused on 3 main goals; To inspire you to visit and explore the Devil’s Lake region, to help you get the most your visit by sharing tips, events, and other helpful information. Lastly to advocate for our environment & wildlife and talk about how we can keep our natural areas amazing now and into the future! That last goal can sometimes cause controversy, but it’s the only way we can accomplish the first two. – Derrick Mayoleth, Owner.

The cell service sucks around the area, but I hope the tower is not inside the park boundaries.
Thank you Derrick for the information.
Hi Derrik! My name is Scott and I work for Bug Tussel. Like Brent said, reception in the park is very poor and with the amount of people climbing, hiking, and swimming, its a matter of safety to have cell phone reception. One of the reasons this tower is being built is to support our FirstNet Network. This technology functions as a normal cell phone tower majority of the time, but in times of crisis, it provides priority to first responders such as police and EMTs. This can be any sort of situation from a lost or hurt hiker, to fires or major storms. We understand that some consider this tower to be an eyesore, but overall its a small price to pay for the safety of park goers. If anyone has any questions, I will be happy to answer them here, or you can reach out via social media search Bug Tussel, phone (877) 227-0924, or email [email protected]. Great Article!
Hi Scott!
Thank you for the information! I find that just getting the details out there is the most important thing. As they say, you can’t please everyone. But open communication goes a long way! I agree on the importance of FirstNet in the park. As far as the issue of it being an eyesore, well, that’s above my paygrade. 😉
Thank you for the info!
