The summer crowd is still hanging around... Autumn is getting later. It's easy to see…
What’s it like to paddle down the Baraboo river? Well, we’ve put together a 15 minute, “Slow TV” style video for you featuring just a few of the summer experiences a day on the river has to offer. So, sit back, relax and enjoy.
In the fall of 2001, the last dam on the Baraboo River was removed making, “The Boo” the longest free-flowing river in the nation to be restored to its pre-settlement condition! The Baraboo river is about 120-mile long traveling from Union Center north-west of Baraboo to the Wisconsin River near Portage and offers some of the best paddling opportunities in the state.
On the day featured in the video, the river was running a bit higher than usual so I took out an old fiberglass sea kayak… Which is fine IF you manage to miss all of the rocks! The section featured here begins in North Freedom, WI and ends just east of the city of Baraboo. This trip can take anywhere from 4 – 7 hours.
For the best video experience, we recommend a high-speed connection and enjoying the HD video in full-screen. Our Youtube channel is here.

For nearly 2 decades the Skillet Creek blog has focused on 3 main goals; To inspire you to visit and explore the Devil’s Lake region, to help you get the most your visit by sharing tips, events, and other helpful information. Lastly to advocate for our environment & wildlife and talk about how we can keep our natural areas amazing now and into the future! That last goal can sometimes cause controversy, but it’s the only way we can accomplish the first two. – Derrick Mayoleth, Owner.
