There are so many holiday events these days, that it's nearly impossible (and expensive!) to…
The Sauk County Fair, bagpipes, archery, astronomy and wolves are all on tap this weekend in the Devil’s Lake region! Just click on a drop-down for details!
The Weather!
A hot one this weekend! Lots of sun, temps in the high 80s and only slight chances of storms. Here’s one local forecast.
Devil’s Lake Hiking Trail Conditions
The trails are in great summer shape. Be aware that on Saturday the park is hosting the Dances With Dirt event, so there will be runners out there on the trails including Steinke Basin and Uplands. We also want to suggest extra caution on the park’s Balanced Rock Trail where dry, dusty quartzite stairs are slick. Folks have reported some minor slips and stumbles. Use caution, wear good shoes and don’t wear flipflops!
The Beach
Swimmer’s Itch has been reported in the lake. For more information click here.
Devil’s Lake Wildlife & Birding
If you’re a fan of the Great Blue Heron rookery it’s worth noting that the chicks are fledging or about to fledge. If you want to get out there to see and hear them, do it soon before they leave the rookery for another season. Here’s a bit of information and video posted earlier this week.

Final Thoughts…
As you can see, there are a lot of activities to keep you busy in the area this weekend! As you know, Devil’s Lake State Park will at times have long lines and be super crowded on Saturday and Sunday, so we encourage you to check out the many other parks and natural areas nearby. We’ve got a ton of information to get you started right here. As always, be safe and bring your patience!
For nearly 2 decades the Skillet Creek blog has focused on 3 main goals; To inspire you to visit and explore the Devil’s Lake region, to help you get the most your visit by sharing tips, events, and other helpful information. Lastly to advocate for our environment & wildlife and talk about how we can keep our natural areas amazing now and into the future! That last goal can sometimes cause controversy, but it’s the only way we can accomplish the first two. – Derrick Mayoleth, Owner.
