Hiking & Wildlife
Hiking Trail Report
Most of the park’s trails are in good condition other than Steinke Basin, which has been par-for-the-course over the last few weeks. Steinke Basin did get a new sign though! Here’s the full trail report.
Birds & Wildlife
There have been lots of snakes out recently at the park! Mostly northern water snakes swimming along the shorelines. They are not dangerous, just watch ’em go by. Meanwhile, the young Great Blue Heron are getting big at the South Shore Rookery. They won’t be staying much longer this season, so get out there to see them soon. Also, keep an eye out for fawns around the park. We captured some good video of one of the park’s little ones on a critter cam last week which you can check out here.
Wrap Up!
I don’t know about you, but it seems like this summer is just flying by. Locally most kids are out, or getting out of school now and the streets are summer-busy again! You hate to mention it, but with the crowds come the creeps. When you visit our parks and natural areas, remember to leave nothing of value in your cars. Break-ins have been happening already.
Otherwise, whatever you’re up to this weekend, have fun. Be safe! Bring your patience. And drivers, be extra attentive to kids, bikes, and motorcycles when out on the roads of Sauk County.
For nearly 2 decades the Skillet Creek blog has focused on 3 main goals; To inspire you to visit and explore the Devil’s Lake region, to help you get the most your visit by sharing tips, events, and other helpful information. Lastly to advocate for our environment & wildlife and talk about how we can keep our natural areas amazing now and into the future! That last goal can sometimes cause controversy, but it’s the only way we can accomplish the first two. – Derrick Mayoleth, Owner.
