As we start talking about changing leaves, it's good to note that fall colors are…
A few years ago, I created Devil’s Lake Adventure Hikes as a way to get out from behind the website and share with you, in person, the many awesome and inspiring locations around the park that are rarely seen by the most of park visitors. These guided hikes take you to “backcountry” locations include waterfalls, historic locations, amazing geology, and wide open vistas.
Since I started Devil’s Lake Adventure Hikes, I set up a series of free hikes, one each month, during the summer. It’s time to announce the hikes and the schedule, so here you go!!
2019 Free Hikes
Follow links for details
Sunday May 19th – Black Bear Falls
Sunday June 9th – South Bluff Adventure (All Day)
Sunday July 21 – Sandstone Overlook (NEW!)
Sunday Aug 4th – Hidden Village
Sunday Oct. 13th – South Bluff Overlook. Our Annual Fall Color Hike!
The new Sandstone Overlook hike is a 2-3 hour hike which will be created by you. We will explore various locations along the way to some amazing overlooks. Participants will help me plan routes and stops for future hikes in this area.
How To Sign Up!
We can only take 10 people per hike. We will put 4 on back up list.
These hikes have grown very popular and most will book up on day one. This year our registration date MONDAY, MAY 6, 2019. Registration is simple, just send an email to [email protected] after Midnight, on Monday, May 6th with the subject “Adventure Registration” Include your name, email address, the hike you want to go on and how many people in your party. I will confirm your registration via email within a few hours.
Rules
- Registration must be sent after Midnight on May 6th. Requests sent before midnight (Sunday, May 5th) will not be accepted.
- We will take the first 10 to register for each hike (by time and date of the email) plus 4 backups.
- Maximum of 3 participants per group/email, unless this is your immediate family.
- You may participate in more than one hike, but you must send a separate email for each hike. (So one email for Bear Falls, and another for South Bluff, etc.)
- You must be 18 to register. Kids must be at least 15 or above for all hikes but the Hidden Village Hike. Kids must be accompanied by an adult parent or caregiver.
- Participants must sign a waiver to participate.
Final Word
Of course, your family or group are always welcome to book a private hike or business outing anytime. We do quite a few hikes each year. However, if you can get in on one of the free hikes, it’s a lot of fun. We always have a great group and a great time.
Keep in mind that these hikes are all “backcountry”. There are no trails and we go rain or shine. If you come, bring your adventurous spirit and your bug spray! Learn More: FAQ | What Should I Bring?

For nearly 2 decades the Skillet Creek blog has focused on 3 main goals; To inspire you to visit and explore the Devil’s Lake region, to help you get the most your visit by sharing tips, events, and other helpful information. Lastly to advocate for our environment & wildlife and talk about how we can keep our natural areas amazing now and into the future! That last goal can sometimes cause controversy, but it’s the only way we can accomplish the first two. – Derrick Mayoleth, Owner.
