Devil's Lake State Park has been transformed into a winter wonderland, with 3-5 inches of…
Mirror Lake State Park is located just 10 minutes north-west of Devil’s Lake near Wisconsin Dells. The park’s Fern Dell Gorge has become a popular destination to see some amazing ice floes each winter. In fact, the Friends of Mirror Lake State Park offer a variety of tours each year.
Well, now that the temperatures are warming up, the tours are over and the ice is quickly melting away. Big ice formations that built up over the winter are turning white and collapsing. Water is flowing everywhere. Overnight, meltwater refreezes, creating temporary crystal stalactites and stalagmites in the crevices of the sandstone. It really is beautiful. And it’s not going to last. (Which is why we went out to capture some quick video and stills for you!)
A word of warning
I’m sure some of you will want to run out and see the last of the ice. If so, it’s important to realize that it’s risky out there now. Large, heavy ice floes are melting fast and may crack and fall at any moment. If you are in the wrong place at the wrong time falling ice could cause a serious injury or death. We certainly do not recommend going anywhere near the ice right now.

For nearly 2 decades the Skillet Creek blog has focused on 3 main goals; To inspire you to visit and explore the Devil’s Lake region, to help you get the most your visit by sharing tips, events, and other helpful information. Lastly to advocate for our environment & wildlife and talk about how we can keep our natural areas amazing now and into the future! That last goal can sometimes cause controversy, but it’s the only way we can accomplish the first two. – Derrick Mayoleth, Owner.
